Riddex Plus is not a new product. It has been sold in the market for more than a decade, but recently has come out in a number of online stores. The manufacturers and affiliates who market Riddex Plus describe it in glowing terms and the impression you are left with at the end is that all you need to do is get one of their units, plug it in and forget about pests.
As many people who purchase online know, not all products are as effective in real life as described in ads, and many times it will look like the seller has actually been a little elastic with the truth, stretching it a bit here and there.
In this review we will take an in depth look at Riddex Plus and find out if it is worth the money you pay or not.
What is Riddex Plus
Riddex Plus is a small unit, just about the size of an iphone that you plug into any convenient electrical outlet. It has a red and a green light and these lights are an indication of whether the unit is on and working or not. It is based on the theory that high pitched sounds are unpleasant and most animals and insects will avoid places that have a continuous high pitched noise emanating from it.

How does Riddex work
Over the past decade or two a number of researches have been conducted on Electronic Pest Control and Riddex claims to use the results of these tests in their pest control. Riddex pest control is very easy according to the manufacturers, the unit, when plugged in converts the entire household’s electrical system into a giant magnetic field that is supposed to interfere with the nervous system of rodents and insects that take refuge here during the day.
Over time the rodents are supposed to avoid going to these places which is why your home is supposed to be free of them. It looks like there’s been a little stretching of the truth here, because many people who have used Riddex claim that they are able to hear a very high pitched, but faint noise whenever the unit is on. This means that the unit is using the ultrasonic method of repelling pests than any electromagnetic method.
The basic idea is that when such high pitched noise is continuously applied to any animal, they will find it so unpleasant that they will slowly
leave that area. As the manufacturers claim, initially there will be a lot of activity around the instrument as most bugs and rodents will be drawn to the noise to investigate it. Over the next couple of weeks though they will find it unpleasant enough to vacate the place.
This seems to imply that you should not make any hasty decisions based on the fact that the initial reaction to the noise is an “Attraction” towards the unit. Many of the bad reviews on the product are by people who have not used it for the mandatory 4 or 6 weeks before saying it did not work. They found bugs crawling all over it and decided that the product did not work.
How effective is riddex
In tests conducted on rodents and insects using high pitched frequency sounds, it was found that there was a mixed result. For example, spiders and cockroaches did not seem to mind the noise as much as rodents and crickets. Even among mice it was found that the size of infestation played a vital role in the results. The larger the infestation, the lesser the chances of the sound having any effect.
Also it was found that if the pests did not leave the area initially, they slowly got used to the high pitched frequencies and some of them managed to tolerate it quite comfortably. This means that as something to ward off pests riddex may be a good idea. If you have a minor infestation of rats, you may get them to vacate your home.
If you have a major infestation you should either go with some other option, or as some people do, use the initial “Attraction” that most rodents have for the unit to trap them.

Are there any disadvantages in using Riddex
Because it uses sound waves there is not much in terms of disadvantages in using Riddex. As mentioned above, it either works or it does not. The advertisements and sellers do not mention the fact that Riddex will work only as a preventive measure, or to clear out small infestations. People who have a large infestation will perhaps purchase the unit expecting miracles and be seriously disappointed which is the reason for all the bad reviews about Riddex.
If you are aware of this one fact and the fact that you need to leave it plugged on for about two months for it to show any effect, there’s nothing much to worry about. Some people have found that the noise that they keep hearing from the unit is highly irritating and have therefore stopped using it. This is because the frequency that the unit emanates is only marginally above the upper cut off of 20,000 Hz that humans can hear. To some this can irritate, while others do not even notice this noise with the amount of ambient noise that is normally there in their homes.
Also Riddex does not seem to have much of an effect on cockroaches and spiders. You will in fact find spiders nesting within the unit. If your infestation is either of these bugs you should go with something else, not riddex.
Will riddex damage my hearing.
The reason why riddex keeps as close to our hearing as possible is just for that reason. Really high pitched noise can not only be so unpleasant to rodents and insects, it can actually damage their eardrums and cause them to leave in hordes. The same noise will however damage your ears too. Using a lower frequency may bring down the effect of the unit somewhat, but you will at least not damage your hearing.
The verdict
Riddex will either work for you or not. Among the hundreds of reviews that you can find online about the product you will never find anything other than a 1 star or a 5 star. There are no moderately pleased people and no one seems to be just happy with it. This is one of the reasons why you need to examine the size of the infestation, as well as the kind of infestation before you get Riddex.
Go with an exterminator first if your infestation is really large. Or use gum paper and traps to remove the pests as they come crawling all over the unit initially. If you do this over the next few months your infestation will slowly go away. You can never get rid of cockroaches and spiders completely because they do not seem to react much to the noise, but most other domestic pests will go away if you take this simple precaution.
At just around $12 or so, it will save you a lot of money too. Even if you have a large infestation, if you are willing to do a bit of work with a trap, you can get rid of your pests in a couple of months time. There’s however no getting away from the noise and if you cannot tolerate it, there’s nothing that can be done about it.

I purchased two Riddex’s about 2 years ago. This week January 23, 2012 I saw 3 adult roaches living in the housing plugged in the wall. I have had mice in the unit as well. Now,I am inclined to believe that this Riddex contraption is a SCAM. I purchaesd Riddex because the ad said that you would be rid of mice, roaches, spiders and any other creepy crawly or four legged things in your home. I was bitten by a sipder while sleeping on my floor for my back. I want to hear from someone the truth about the Riddex contraption. I am not convince at all that the Riddex does what it is suppose to do. I’ve seen more bugs with Riddex than without it.
You need to stop lying to the public. I will tell everyone I know that is thinking of piurchasing a Riddex my experience with your Riddex whatever it is suppose to be doing that I find it is not doing. I am not a happy camper right now as I type this comment to you.
